Chat and Chew

 What is Chat and Chew?

Each day our class will have Chat and Chew.  During this time, the children will have a little snack and discuss a topic with the children at their table.  We will work on speaking and listening skills at this time.  We will have a quick mini-lesson about a speaking or listening skill, then each table group will have their own discussion about the given topic.  The topic is related to a book we read, curriculum content, or a general conservational topic.  The children eat their snack as they talk with the children at their table.  At the end of Chat and Chew, we take a minute to talk as a whole group about the skill we worked on or the content of the discussion.

Current focus:

Chat and Chew is an opportunity for children to learn about and practice communication skills.  They know they need to look at the talker, stick to the topic, and are learning currently that listening is as important as talking.  Good listeners help the talker too; they can look at the listeners and find out if they are being understood by looking at the listener's face to see if they are confused, happy, sad or excited about what they have said.  We will continue to work on developing these skills throughout the year.

 Donations Needed

We need snack donations for Chat and Chew.  Please send in a box or container that will be shared with the whole class.  The snack should be something that is not messy that is bought from the store and not homemade.  Please do not send in snacks that are individually wrapped packets.  These are usually too big a serving for our quick snack.   Do not send in fresh fruit or vegetables.

Below are some examples of possible snacks:

crackers

graham crackers

Nilla wafers

pretzels

Please do not send in bags of potato chips or similar items.  Please keep the snacks simple.  The focus of this time should be on the conversations the table groups are having, not the snack.

IMPORTANT

Several children in kindergarten have peanut allergies.  Please check the ingredient labels to be sure the snacks you send in do not have any peanuts in them.

Watch for notes requesting additional snacks throughout the year.
